Fears grow for children of Irish Imam in Cairo

36 Islamic prisoners have been killed during an attempted jailbreak in Egypt, as authorities continue their crackdown on supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi.

It brings the death toll after 5 days of violence to almost 800.

Senior European Union diplomats are set to hold emergency talks today to discuss any future action.

There are conflicting reports of how the prisoners died.

Fears are growing for the safety of four Irish-Egyptian siblings held in military custody in Cairo.

The children of the Imam of Ireland’s largest mosque in Dublin were forced to seek sanctuary on Friday after violence erupted between supporters of the ousted president Morsi and security forces.

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs says the four are being held at the Tora Prison in Cairo – Joe Costello says Irish diplomats want to visit them in prison to make sure their safe.
