Michael Lillis a neighbour of the victim says fears are heightened in the area following the incident – believed to be the third break in a the man's home.

This latest one occured on Sunday evening at about twenty past six.

Two men entered the property attacked the pensioner and tied him up – they were then disturbed by a visitor who is understood to be the victim's brother in law.

Mr Lillis says people in the area thought incidents like this had stopped happening:

Gardaí say investigations are continuing into the incident – officers have conducted searches of lands around Kilmihil and house to house enquiries.

A spokesperson says members of the public have been coming forward in the hopes of providing assistance and Gardaí are encouraging people to contact them with any information.

Reacting to the attack Age Action Ireland is urging people to be more aware of who lives in your community and to pay regular visits to neighbours.

The organisation says it's vital people help Gardaí in their enquiries.
