It’s feared that the EU could effectively kill off the act of turf-cutting in Clare in the coming years if action is not taken.
The ICSA is calling on the government to stop the closure of bogs which have been shut down for reasons of environmental protection.
31 bogs have already been closed, and while no Clare bogs are affected, Tullaher Lough and Bog near Doonbeg is set to be shut at the end of the year.

The government is offering 15 thousand euro as compensation for farmers affected by the move but General Secretary of the ICSA and Cratloe native Eddie Punch feels this isn’t enough.
