Concern has been expressed that the government’s decision to scrap a national planning program could hurt the development of Ennis and Shannon.
Environment Minister Phil Hogan has announced that he’s to abolish the National Spatial Strategy, which designated 18 areas as gateways and hubs through which employment and investment were to be directed

Limerick and Shannon were linked together as one gateway, with Ennis among the list of hub towns.
However, Minister Hogan says the plan "didn’t work" as the areas never received adequate resources – Ennis Green Party Councillor Brian Meaney feels this is a mistake
