Fewer Clare Residents Turning To Religion

There’s been an almost 4% drop in the number of Catholics living in Clare.

The latest census results show that while Catholicism remains the predominant religion in the county, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of people with no religion over a five year period.

Clare FM’s James Mulhall reports:

In 2011, the 6,384 people with no religion comprised 5.4% of the county’s population but by 2016, this had risen to 10,164 people, or 8.6% of Clare’s population.

Catholicism remains the predominant religion, accounting for 82% of Clare’s population last year, or just over 98,300 people, but this is down from just under 102,000 five years earlier.

The figures also show there are 1,942 Church of Ireland members in the county, 1,229 Muslims and 745 Orthodox.
