A scheme which saw members of the Clare fire service visit the county’s schools to educate children about fire safety has been withdrawn as a result of budget cutbacks.
The scheme had run for two years, but has now been removed, along with another which saw fire service members assist people in their homes.
Clare’s fire service has a budget this year of 5.37 million euro, though it collects less than half a million in fees.
This is despite an increase in callouts to certain types of fire in the county – the first six months of this year saw a 570% rise in the number of forest fires.
Clare’s Chief Fire Officer Adrian Kelly says their focus had to be on priority services
