Flood Relief works prevented Ennis Disaster

The flooding crisis could have been catastrophic for Ennis if works along the River Fergus had not been carried out.

That’s the view of the Ennis Town Engineer who says the flood relief works in the Parnell Street Car Park, saved much of the town from disaster, despite public opinion that the new river walls simply moved the flooding further down stream.

Members of Ennis Town Council were told last night that a full re-evaluation of the flooding risk to the town will now be carried out, but that structures like the post office bridge are safe, following recent closures when river levels were at an all time high.

Independent Councillor Tommy Brennan says expert engineers should now also take local knowledge into account as many long time residents could have identified some of the problem areas
