Forensic testing is expected to be carried out in an effort to identify a body discovered on the banks of the River Shannon near Leabasheeda.
The body was discovered on the shoreline near Colmanstown Castle by members of the Shannon-based Irish coast Guard helicopter who were on route to a training exercise, around 5 o'clock yesterday evening.
Members of the Divisional Crime Scene Investigation unit carried out a preliminary examination before the body was transferred to University Hospital Limerick for a post-mortem examination.
Gardaí say they are following a line of enquiry and are checking their missing persons database in an effort to identify the person.
