A judge has ordered the arrest of Ivor Callely after he failed to turn up in court to face an action to have him jailed for non-payment of a debt.

The former Minister of State is no stranger to court, having been jailed for 5 months in 2014 for using false invoices to claim expenses for over 4000 euro at Leinster House in 2007 and 2009 while a Senator.

In this unrelated case – Mr Callely was due to appear at Dublin District Court today, but didn't show up – resulting in a bench warrant being issued for his arrest.

This set of proceedings results from his failure to comply with terms of a 2013 district court judgement compelling him to pay a €1,755 euro debt to Galway based accountants Gallagher & Company who have asked the judge to issue a committal order.

The court heard he owes around €250,000 to the legal firm; he also owes €5m to AIB and €11m to another creditor.
