Fresh Fears Over Flooding In Clonlara

Clare County Council says it's continuing to engage with the OPW in an effort to identify a solution to historic flooding issues in South East Clare.

It follows concerns by Clonlara residents that a funding application for a minor works scheme has been put on hold while an environmental impact study is carried out.

Water levels on the river Shannon rose significantly in recent weeks promtpting fears of further flooding.

It's just under a year since Springfield, Clonlara last became submerged in flood waters and with the winter fast approaching, fears are emerging over a similar situation again this year.

Water levels on the river Shannon rose significantly in recent weeks due to heavy rainfall in September, and Professor of Hydrology at UCD Michael Bruen says water levels will have to be watched closely this winter:

Residents in the Springfield area have written to the ESB and Minister Denis Naughton in an effort to push ahead with preventative measures.

They want water to be released from Lough Derg through Parteen Weir, so the system will have greater capacity.

But Spokesperson for the ESB, Bernadine Maloney says that isn't possible.

Springfield residents have also raised concerns that a funding application for a minor works scheme has been put on hold while an environmental impact study is carried out.

Gerardine Quinlivan says residents are frustrated by a lack of action.

In a statement to Clare FM, Clare County Council says it's seeking funding approval from the OPW for a focused feasibility study, to identify a sustainable solution to the historic flooding issues at Springfield.

The local authority inistst that discussions with the Office of Public works re ongoing.
