Primary and secondary schools across Clare have received government funding for water conservation measures.
The move is in an effort to offset the cost of water charges being imposed on schools and work should get underway in the coming months.
This grant aid is part of a 9.75 million euro scheme announced by the Education Minister Mary Coughlin and is being distributed to 58 primary and 12 secondary schools here in the county.
The monies will enable the 70 Clare schools to reduce their water usage through the installation of water displacement devices, percussion spray taps, thermostatic mixing valves and other water controls.
Water charges were introduced to schools a number of years ago on a staggered basis with transitional rates applying – but that came to an end last January and since that date, water usage in schools has been metered and schools are required to pay for the water used.
Welcoming the funding Senior Minister and Clare TD Tony Kileen says the conservation measures should provide much needed savings for school as well as a local employment boost over the coming months.
