Further Criticism of Kilkee Coastal Works

A programme of improvements to the cliff walk in Kilkee has been described as a "horror show" by one of Ireland’s leading architects.

Clare County Council recently intalled signs and safety rails along with a tarmacadam overlay on the existing coastal walk at Newfoundout, in the popular West Clare resort, but recently Kilkee councillors expressed annoyance at the damage caused to green areas along the route by the 50,000 euro project.

Their concerns have now been echoed by architect Hugh Murray, a frequent visitor to the area, who’s quoted in today’s Irish Times questioning "How so much damage could be done to such a scenic natural setting in the name of improvements?

In particular he’s expressed annoyance at what he descrbies as the "disgraceful destruction of the grassy areas on the path edges which will take years to recover and the absurd billboard signs blocking the sea view in Kilkee with a photo image of the sea view itself.
