An Eastern European man in his 30's was shot in the face at a Garda checkpoint at Shanagolden near Foynes in the early hours of this morning.

He was transferred to hospital and his condition where he was initially in a critical condition but is now reported to have stabilised.

It's reported that the man may have been shot accidentally by a member of the Emergency Response Unit.

The incident has since been referred by the Garda Síochána to GSOC under section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act.

This provides for an independent investigation of "any matter that appears to indicate that the conduct of a member of the Garda Síochána may have resulted in the death of, or serious harm to, a person".

GSOC investigators have now been deployed to the scene and an investigation is ongoing.

Journalist with the Irish Independent, Conor Feehan, says the shooting followed a Garda call out to a robbery in North Cork.
