The Garda Ombudsman Commssion is to investigate a crash involving two motorbikes at a Garda Checkpoint near Newmarket-on-Fergus yesterday morning
The accident happened around 11 o’clock yesterday morning on the N18 Ennis to Limerick dual carriageway when the motorcycles were flagged down at a checkpoint by Gardaí and they collided with each other.
One of the drivers was seriously injured while the other man escaped injury
Gardaí had set up a checkpoint between the Newmarket-on-Fergus and Shannon turn offs on the main N18 Ennis to Limerick road yesterday morning.
The two motorcycles, which were travelling together, were flagged down by Gardaí but as they were slowing down they collided and crashed.
One of the men was seriously injured and taken to Limerick’s Regional Hospital while the second man escaped harm.
Two ambulances, a rapid response advanced paramedic unit and a local doctor attended the incident.
Neither motorcycle came in contact with any member of the Gardaí or their equipment.
The case has been referred to the Garda Ombudsman Commission as it took place close to their speed check
The Gardaí who had been operating the speed trap and the second motorcyclist are expected to be interviewed.
