The Garda Ombudsman Commission is investigating the death of a man in Galway, after his body was taken from the River Corrib.
A major search and rescue operation, involving the Shannon-based Coast Guard Helicopter, was launched just before half six yesterday evening.
The man in his 40s had been stopped at a Garda traffic checkpoint when he left his vehicle and entered the water at O’Brien’s Bridge.
Gardaí alerted the coastguard and a search operation involving the fire brigade, Galway RNLI and a Shannon based rescue helicopter was launched.
The body of the man was located near the entrance to the lower bridge at Lough Atalia an hour later, and was airlifted to shore.
