CCTV footage and other data is being reviewed as part of a Garda investigation which has been underway since early yesterday morning.

The security alarm was activated around 10 o'clock on Sunday night, following which, it was discovered that thieves had gained entry through the front door and a sum of money had been taken.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the money taken may have been in the region of twenty thousand euro. No further loss or damage has been reported.

Clare's Crime Prevention Officer, Sergeant Joe Downey is appealing to anyone with information on the burglary to come forward.

The visitor centre was closed for a time yesterday to allow power be restored, but it has now re-opened.

In a statement to Clare FM, Clare County Council says it's taking this incident seriously, and that no security breaches have previously been experienced at the centre, which opened in 2007.

Existing security arrangements are being reviewed in light of this incident and any further measures considered necessary will be implemented by the local authority.

Anyone with information on the incident is being asked to contact Ennistymon Garda Station on 065 707 2180.
