Gardaí had publicly expressed concerns for his safety as they believed he may have been abducted from his home on the night he disappeared…

The grim discovery on Friday afternoon was made just a week after Gardaí investigating the disappearance of Mr Green had asked farmers with lands along the River Shannon to check their property.

Francis Greene who was originally from Kilteely in Limerick was last seen near his home at Heartstonge in Limerick City Centre.;

A major investigation has been ongoing since his disappearance as it was believed he was taken at knife point from his home.

The Shannon-based coastguard helicopter assisted in the search operation and Garda divers also searched parts of the River Shannon

Last month a 27-year-old man was arrested by detectives on suspicion of falsely imprisoning the 48-year-old but was later released without charge.

Gardai are now awaiting further test results but its believed Mr Greene suffered a violent death and may have been in the water for some time before being discovered by a local farmer in Portrine.
