Gardaí are thanking the public for their assistance, following the discovery of a hand grenade in Newmarket on Fergus.
The vintage device was found in a stone wall yesterday afternoon, while a family was clearing the backyard of a cottage they had purchased on the main street in the village.
At around half past five, EOD personnel carried out a visual inspection of the device in situ, before it was moved to a corner of the property – buried – and covered with sandbags in preparation for the controlled explosion.
It’s believed the hand grenade had been on the property for some time and could date back to the War of independence.
