Calls have been made on Clare Gardai to facilitate the installation of furether CCTV cameras in Ennis.
Councillors have argued that increased levels of surveillence have cut crime worldwide, while statistics show that Ennis does not have the same levels of camera coverage as similar sized towns in the UK.
Currently, the Gardai manage and monitor a system which is funded by the OPW, while a seperate community CCTV system is operated in the ‘RAPID’ area of Ennis, which is designated for improved planning and investment.
That required the approval of the Garda Commissioner.
Councillor Mary Howard says that increased levels of CCTV have been shown to work elsewhere.
