A new global emergency tracking service for aircraft has been announced for Clare.
Canadian Company Aireon's new venture is to be managed from the Irish Aviation Authority’s centre in Newmarket on Fergus.
Aireon is the developer of the world’s first space-based global air traffic surveillance system.
The company is to base its Aircraft Locating and Emergency Response Tracking service in the Irish Aviation Authority's North Atlantic Communications Centre in Ballygirreen in Newmarket on Fergus.
The Aireon ALERT will be provided to aviation officials on a free of charge public service basis.
It's hoped that approximately 90 percent of the world’s commercial fleet will be compatible with the system in the near future.
The IAA has welcomed the move, saying, Ireland's position as a politically neutral state and our reputation for fairness for all users will ensure the success of the venture.
