Government Called On To Overhaul Direct Provision System

The government is being called on to overhaul the entire direct provision system, to improve living conditions for asylum seekers coming to Ireland.

It comes as the contract for the centre at the King Thomond Hotel in Lisdoonvarna is to be extended for a further six months, having first opened its doors a year ago.

An initial 30 asylum seekers were taken in, with capacity for 115 over the lifetime of the 12 month contract, but as early as last December, figures released by the government showed it was operating at above capacity.
