The Dail’s Public Accounts Committee will question the accounting officer at the Department of Finance today, to find out why an error took place which meant that 3.6-billion euro was unnecessarily added to the Government debt.

Yesterday the Finance Minister Michael Noonan told the Dáil that the mistake was flagged to his department in August of last year.
But even when officials from the National Treasury Management Agency raised
suspicions that the debt was being double counted – nothing was done.
The error was only corrected this week.
