Government To Wait For European Review Before Easing Tax Burden On Charities

The Dáil has heard the government will have to wait for a European review of VAT laws before easing the burden of the tax on charities.

It's after the Finance Minister was told that the Clare branch of the Red Cross raised 76,000 euro in funds to purchase a community ambulance, and that 16,000 of this was handed over in tax.

Minister Michael Noonan responded by saying there are some VAT refunds available, and that current EU laws, which are under review, leaves them with little options.

However, Clare Independent TD Michael Harty feels an unfair burden is being placed on some charities.
