Govt to unveil Shannon Airport plans today

Long awaited plans for the proposed separation of Shannon Airport from the DAA are set to be unveiled by the government today.

The Transports and Enterprise Ministers will hold a joint press conference at Leinster House where they will announce plans for the aviation industry and  enterprise in the Shannon region.

It’s understood the plan involves the creation of a new authority for the Mid West airport with a ‘debt free’ position.

Transport Minister Leo Varadkar has had the findings of the Booz consultants report on the future of Shannon since late last year, and yesterday at Cabinet it appears his fellow ministers gave the proposals the green light.

Today at 11.30 details of that plan will be unveiled  which will see Shannon seperated from the Dublin Airport Authority.

Clare’s international facility would remain in public ownership – possibly with a role for Shannon Development in managing the facility, as the agency’s investment roles have been assumed into the IDA and Enterprise Ireland.

It’s expected the Government will write-down or leave Shannon’s debt with the DAA – it’s understood the airport was in deficit by 8 million euro last year and could have long standing debt totalling 100 million.

One of the main options for developing the mid-west airport is 2000 acres of a land bank that many believe could be used to create a hub for aircraft maintenance.
