Head of MidWest Hospital Group Apologises

The head of the MidWest's hospitals group has apologised to Clare patients for the long waits and undignified situations they have had to deal with in the region's main accident and emergency department.

Ann Doherty's comments come after HIQA said the Dooradoyle facility isn't fit for purpose.  She's promised that progress IS being made.

Ann Doherty's apology, during today's edition of Morning Focus, came after she heard from Clare patients who have repeatedly told Clare FM of long, undignified waits in the region's main hospital.

Their claims have been backed up by the health watchdog, with Friday's HIQA report stating that overcrowding at the facility has  led to risks for patients and for staff.

Ann Doherty says she can't guarantee that there will be no repeat.

The UL Hospitals group is insisting, however, that progress is being made to address the situation.

This includes the construction of a new A&E facility, which is set to be completed in 2016.

In the meantime, new facilities have been opened and local injuries units, including that in Ennis, are being promoted in GPs offices.

There have been calls for full A&E cover to be restored in Ennis but Ann Doherty doesn't think this is appropriate.

In light of HIQA's findings, calls have been made for the government and the Department of Health to take note and take action.

General Secretary of the Irish Nurses and Midwieves Organisation is Liam Doran.

Meanwhile, the Clare Oireachtas members of the main government party are to be hear what the public have been saying to the party's local representatives during the recent election campaign.

New Mayor of Clare and Fine Gael Councillor John Crowe says the party's Councillors will meet TDs and Senators this week.
