The reconfiguration of acute health services in Clare Limerick and Tipperary will come under the spotlight tonight.

It’s all part of a series of health debates being run by Pfizer in association with the Irish Times.

Tonight’s motion is "this house believes that centralising acute hospital services is in the interest of patient safety.”

The consultants charged with heading up the changes in the Mid West Region, Paul Burke and Cathal O Donnell will be debating FOR the motion.

Renowned cardiac surgeon Maurice Neligan along with Co Chairman of the Clare/North Tipperary GP Action Committee Dr Michael Harty will be speaking against it

The reconfiguration of services saw the removal of 24 hour emergency cover at Ennis General which has sparked fears over the great distances patients from North and West Clare will have to travel for treatment.

Tonight’s debate takes place at the Limerick Institute of Technology at 6.30
