330% Increase In UHL Trolley Numbers In 10-Year Period

The number of people left waiting on trolleys in corridors at the region’s main hospital has increased by more than 330% in the past 10 years.

New figures released by the INMO shows that the past month is the worst April on record in terms of hospital overcrowding, with more than 10,200 on trolleys nationally.

Across the month of April, 10,229 people were left waiting on trolleys in Irish hospitals, an increase of around 800 on the same month last year.

Once again, University Hospital Limerick was the most overcrowded in the country, with 1,206 patients left waiting for beds last month.

It’s the highest ever figure for April and is well ahead of the next busiest facility – Cork University Hospital – where there was 826 on trolleys last month.

The figure for Dooradoyle is almost 200 more than the same month last year, and when compared to April of 2009, it’s a 330% increase in trolley numbers in a decade.

At Ennis General Hospital, meanwhile, there were just 13 were on trolleys across April, which represents a rise of 10 on the same month last year.
