An inspection of the MidWest’s main hospital has found issues with cleanliness and infection control.
However, auditors from the Health Information and Quality Authority have found that most areas of University Hospital Limerick were generally clean, tidy and well maintained.
The unannounced inspection, carried out last month, found layers of dust in a number of areas, including underneath a patient bed and on the wheels of a resuscitation trolley.
Staff were also found to have missed four of 22 hand hygiene opportunities observed by inspectors. Hand hygiene is regarded as the single most important preventative measure in the transmission of infections.
