HIQUA heavily critical of A&E trolley wait at Tallaght Hospital

A new report is heavily critical of the treatment of patients in the Emergency Department of Tallaght Hospital in Dublin.

The Health Information and Quality Authority says there was a persistent and generally accepted tolerance of patients lying on trolleys in corridors for long periods of time – putting their welfare at risk.

HIQA says there was a history of longstanding challenges in leadership, governance and management at the hospital’s Board and Executive level.

And it says the State failed to hold Tallaght effectively to account for the quality and safety of services it provided.

HIQA says it also has significant concerns in relation to the waiting times and quality of information in other hospitals providing a 24 hour Emergency Department.

REACTION

The interim board of Tallaght Hospital has accepted the findings of the HIQA investigation into the care given to adults in the emergency department.

The CEO of Tallaght Hospital says the findings were serious and far-reaching.

The Hospital says that progress has already been made at the facility in reducing waiting times – and in implementing a rule that patients on trolleys cannot be left in the corridor of the Emergency Department.
