Hogan Seeks Fair Prices For Farmers

A Clare farming representative has given a cautious welcome to European Commission plans aimed at ensuring that farmers are paid a fair price for their produce.

Agriculture Commissioner Phil Hogan has decided that a voluntary code of conduct for supermarkets, which sought to eliminate an unfair treatment of suppliers, is not working.

As a result, he's planning to introduce legislation to ensure a fair share of food retail prices for farmers.

Clare farmers are among those who have taken part in demonstrations outside of supermarkets as part of their campaign for reform, and Cratloe man and ICSA General Secretary Eddie Punch has welcomed the announcement.
