Hopes have been expressed that the Western rail corridor will be extended in the near future.
The Department of Transport has said it could consider the project as part of the next Capital Investment plan, which will be considered shortly and is due to run from 2016.

The first phase opened in 2010 with the line between Ennis and Galway, but supporters want the rail-line extended to Sligo.
