Clare Labour TD Michael McNamara hopes planned government legislation on abortion will lead to a reduction in the number of women here undergoing terminations in the UK on health grounds.
Figures from the British Health Department show that in the four years up until the end of 2011 at least 300 Clare women travelled there for abortions.

However that figure is believed to be much higher, given some women didn’t state their county of origin or gave UK addresses.
The proposals by government are to legislate and regulate for abortion – when the life of the woman is at risk and Deputy McNamara is hopeful this will reduce the need for some Clare women to travel abroad in these circumstances.
