Hopes new beds at UHL will ease overcrowding

The INMO is remaining cautiously optimistic that the introduction of 30 new beds at the region's main hospital will help ease overcrowding.

University Hospital Limerick has experienced what's described as its worst summer of overcrowding with the number of people waiting on trolleys hitting a peak of 56 last month, whil 45 were waiting for beds yesterday.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation says the rise in figures is due to a combination of factors, namely a reduction in primary care and community care for the elderly.

Spokesperson Mary Fogarty is hoping the extra beds will reduce the numbers waiting on trolleys there
