Hopes have been expressed that Clare's County Councillors will give their backing to a poll on a united Ireland.

Fianna Fáil Meelick Councillor Cathal Crowe believes local authorities should pressure the Government to carry out a border poll in light of Northern Ireland's vote to remain withhin the EU.

The move has been welcomed by a local Sinn Féin representative.

Following Northern Ireland's vote to stay within the European Union, Sinn Féin and other groups have suggested that the people of the six counties be allowed to have their say on whether they remain a part of the UK.

And now, a South East Clare Councillor has added his voice to the issue and is calling on his fellow representatives to back a motion calling for a poll on a united Ireland.

Meelick Councillor Cathal Crowe believes local authorities throughout the country should pressure the Government to support such a vote and he's confident of securing the backing of his fellow representatives.

A Clare Sinn Féin representative believes the benefits of uniting the country far outweighs the financial cost to the Irish Government.

Noeleen Moran is welcoming councillor's motion, saying she's heartened by the Fianna Fáil representative's interest in the issue.

The North Clare woman believes steps should now be taken to ensure a poll is carried out on both sides of the border.
