Hopes That New Government Deal Will Be Reached As Early As Tonight

It's hoped a deal on a new Government will be reached as early as tonight or tomorrow.

But some Independent TDs remain doubtful that a vote for Taoiseach can take place this week.

Talks between the two main parties have already yielded a deal but today there's been disagreement between two Clare TDs on whether water charges have been consigned to the past.

Last night the country's two largest parties endorsed a "confidence and supply arrangement", to facilitiate a minority-led Government.

The document is a broad statement of policy principals and includes the suspension of water charges for nine months and the establishment of a commission of independent experts to examine the future of Irish Water.

But A Clare Fine Gael TD has denied that his party has lost out on the issue, saying the utility will remain in place in an effort to improve infrastructure and conserve water.

Pat Breen says people will have to continue to pay their charges until the suspension comes into effect.

Clare's Fianna Fáil TD says there's now a recognition that the creation of Irish Water was a mistake.

Timmy Dooley insists charges for water won't re-emerge any time soon.

But the agreement still needs the backing of several Independent TDs and a long day of negotiations is expected today.

Tomorrow's Dáil schedule could be cleared if a deal is struck – and while Friday hasn't been ruled out for a vote on Tasoieach, Fine Gael sources say realistically, they're now working towards a Dáil vote on Tuesday.
