The number of new houses being built has fallen to its lowest level since records began 40 years ago.
Figures from the Department of the Environment show there were just 8,488 new homes completed last year – down nearly 2-thousand on the previous year.

In 2006 the number was more than ten times higher, with over 93 thousand houses built.
The 2012 figures marked the lowest point in the construction of new homes since 1970 – when almost 14 thousand houses were built.
