HSE Apologises For Miscarriage Misdiagnoses

The HSE has apologised for the distress caused to 24 women who were given a misdiagnosis of miscarriage.

A report published today by the Health Service Executive into the controversy points to a multitude of causes, including an over-reliance on ultrasound to diagnose a miscarriage in very early pregnancy when the foetus and heartbeat is tiny.

In June last year Melissa Redmond, from Donabate in North County Dublin, came forward after she was wrongly told she had miscarried at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, Co Louth.

The HSE says the report’s recommendations – on training, equipment and clinical managment – are being implemented.
