The HSE has said that no useful purpose is being served by a nurses’ work to rule at the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick

In a statement a spokesperson for the Executive has defended its new policy which aims to deal with overcrowding at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department, arguing that it has been approved by all departments in the hospital, including nurses.

They have also argued that the new policy, which sees patients moved from the Emergency Department and placed in wards in different parts of the hospital, is working as there has been a 54% reduction in the number of patients waiting unnecessarily for an inpatient bed since it was implemented.

Nursing staff at the hospital are today entering day two of their action over the policy which they say has led to increased overcrowding and pressure
