The warning comes in light of fire safety concerns, with Limerick's chief fire officer Michael Ryan telling Councillors there that the hospital has exceeded its own patient safety threshold targets at the ED.

The HSE said an inspection at the A&E last October found there were around 162 patients there, even though the risk assessment threshold requires there be no more than 44 patients present.

Reports this morning, including in The Irish Examiner, say the situation has been monitored by the hospital and the fire service over recent months.
