IMO Warns Of Patient Care In Clare

The Irish Medical Organisation has warned that a ‘brain drain’ of graduating GPs is compromising patient care here in Clare.

Doctors say a 25 per cent hike in the number of medical cards in the last five years has led to a significant jump in GP visits, and are calling for a five-fold increase in money for the sector to bring Ireland in line with other European countries.

They’re also calling for a strategy to extend the range of services provided through GPs as well as measures to keep graduating doctors in Ireland.

Lahinch-based Dr. Michael Kelleher, a member of the IMO’s GP Committee, warns failure to do this will lead to considerable pressures as Ireland’s population gets older.
