Increase in compensation payments in 2010

The number of Clare people receiving compensation in respect of personal injury claims rose in 2010, but the monies paid out to them fell.

Nationally, total amounts paid out as part of compensation claims fell by 30%.

In 2010 a total of 177 Clare residents received compensation following an accident in which they suffered an injury, up from 170 for the previous year

However, despite this rise, the total sum of money paid out to people in Clare fell by 100,000 euro to 3.7 million.

The average amount awarded was also less than the figure recorded on a national basis according to stats released by the Injuries Board, a statutory body which assesses the amount of compensation due to a person who has suffered a personal injury.

Overall, nearly three quarters of awards were for injuries from road traffic accidents but there was a fall in the total number of claims, despite cold snaps at the start and end of 2010.
