INMO says working conditions must improve for nurses

A group representing nurses, says better packages need to be offered, in order to attract experienced nurses to take jobs in Irish hospitals.

Yesterday the Health Minister announced that 500 new nursing jobs will be created this year.

These positions are in addition to 300 mental health nursing positions which are also due to be filled this year.

The INMO says that it has also secured another 660 jobs, through negotiations in recent weeks with nine regional hospitals.

The new jobs have been created in an effort to deal with the over-crowding crisis in hospitals around the country.

Although the INMO is welcoming the new jobs, it says poor working conditions in Irish hospitals will deter nurses from applying for work here.

General Secretary of the INMO Liam Doran, thinks the recruitment process will have to be on an international scale so that the new positions can be filled
