It will be chaired by Ms Justice Yvonne Murphy, and is expected to examine nine homes accounting for almost 24,000 births from the foundation of the State until the late 1980's.

The inquiry was announced last May, after the discovery of a septic tank thought to contained the bodies of around 800 babies born in the Tuam Mother and Baby Home.

The Terms of Reference will be debated in the Oireachtas before the Commission is formally established, and it’s expected to take three years to complete.
