INTO Clare Rep Describes Class Sizes As National Shame

The INTO's representative in Clare has described the number of children being taught in supersized classes as a "national shame."

The latest figures from the Department of Education show 3,260 – or one in four – primary pupils in the county are in classes of thirty or more.

At the moment, the Department provides a teacher for every 27 pupils, but the INTO says more than 130 thousand children are in similar sized classes nationwide.

The union's recently appointed representative for the county, Brendan Horan says schools are now also facing a shortage of qualified teachers.
