At about half seven yesterday evening, a large, SUV type car was seen getting into difficulty off the pier in Buncrana in North Donegal.

Local man Francis Crawford called out to the driver of the car, who asked him to call the coastguard.

He was told emergency services were on their way, but the car started to drift out within moments;

Francis Crawford says he asked a passerby to swim out to help the family.

The baby was taken to Letterkenny General Hosptial and is said to be stable, but his father, grandmother, aunt and two male cousins all lost their lives in what gardai are calling a tragic accident.

It’s understood the mother of all three children was not in the car.

The North's First Minister has been speaking about the tragedy.

Arlene Foster says she was shocked by accounts of the accident
