The cyclist, believed to be a foreign national in her 30's,was knocked from her bicycle at the junction of Rutland Street and the Dublin Road shortly before half past seven.

It's understood an articulated truck and the cyclist were both travelling in the same direction from the city and were turning right when the collision happened.

The woman was taken to University Hospital Limerick where she was pronounced dead.

The driver of the truck was treated at the scene by paramedics.

The road remains closed for a forensic examination and diversions are in place at the Abbey Bridge and at Mary Street traffic lights.

Significant delays are being reported for  motorists travelling in the general area and entering the city from South-East Clare, including Ardnacrusha.
