Ireland South MEP Encourages Employees To Educate Themselves On Workers Rights

An MEP for Ireland South is encouraging all employees to ensure they are fully aware of their rights in the workplace.

The advice from Fine Gael's Deirdre Clune comes after a Spanish au pair was awarded almost 10,000 euro when winning a landmark case against an Irish family.

The woman was paid between 2.50 and 5 euro an hour – plus board – for between 30 and 60 hours a week.

She took a case to the Workplace Relations Commission who ordered that she should be compensated for money owed for work, rest, annual leave and public holidays which the family accepted.

Deirdre Clune says there are robust employment laws in place and it's important everyone is familiar with them to ensure they are not exploited.
