Irish Water leads to first Government Split in the Seanad

In the Dáil, Enda Kenny rowed back on Joan Burton's predicted cost of water, while the Seanad has seen another split between the government partners.

In the Dail last night, Tanaiste Joan Burton appeared to indicate that lower-than-expected water charges are in store when she said the bills for a family of four adults would be less than €200.

However, a spokesman for Joan Burton said the Tanaiste was merely expressing an opinion, a line repeated by An Taoiseach today when he came under renewed pressre during leaders questions.

Amid reports that Fine gael Ministers have expressed unease about her comments, Enda Kenny says the Labour leader was "speaking in a personal capacity."

He was also asked to say if her figures would become reality, but said the government won't in a position to make an announcement for two weeks.

Earlier, the Finance Minister has all but ruled out asking the Revenue Commissioners to chase unpaid water bills.

Michael Noonan says the Revenue has never been given a role in collecting utility debts in the past.

Meanwhile, in the Seanad, Labour members supported calls for a referendum to prohibit private ownership of Irish Water.

It marks the first time the government parties have voted against each other in the Oireachtas.
