It’s London calling from Shannon

New figures released by the CSO have also shown how Clare's international airport is closing in on Cork as Ireland's second-busiest airport.

These statistics back up Shannon Airport's own findings of a marginal growth in passenger numbers last year, it's first year of independence.

Arresting a five-year slide, 1.31 million passengers used the Airport, an increase of 22 thousand.

The rise also saw the gap to Cork Airport reduced by over 100 thousand, as it's traffic fell.

Nearly 20% of all of Shannon's passengers travelled to or from Heathrow, with Stansted the second most popular destination and Gatwick fourth.

Also in the top ten are Newark, JFK, Boston, Manchester, Lanzarote, Palma and Wroclaw.

The airport also handled 14,000 tonnes of freight last year, an annual reduction of 13%.

Meanwhile, separate figures from the Irish Aviation Authority have confirmed that there were an average of 74 commercial flights at Shannon each day last month, an 18% increase on July 2013.
