Kilrush Mother & Baby Home Included in Commission of Inquiry

The Minister for Children has announced the Kilrush Mother and Baby home is included in a three year investigation into 14 facilities which operated across the country.

The Government has confirmed details of the inquiry which has come about following the revelations last year about the deaths of almost 800 children at the Tuam home.

The Kilrush Mother and baby home – which is believed to have closed in 1932 – had largely been forgotten about until revelations about the high rate of deaths at a similar facility in Tuam came to light last year.

They are now included in a list of 14 homes that will be examined over the next three years as part of the Commission of Investigation – which will be led by Ms Justice Yvonne Murphy.

The inquiry will examine the entry and exit arrangements at the homes, burials, vaccine trials and if any residents were treated differently on any grounds  – and report back in 18 months.

Children's Minister James Reilly's announced the terms of reference for the commission this morning.

Other facilities included are Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home in Tuam, Sean Ross Abbey in Roscrea and Bessboro House in Cork.

Paddy Waldron says condidtions were difficult in Kilrush however he says it also provided support for women who were victims of domestic violence.

The Terms annouced today will now be debated in the Oireachtas before the Commission is formally established.
